WW84 Review and Commmentary

Yesterday I watched the awaited sequel to 2017’s Wonder Woman; WW84 with some friends, and we were mildly disappointed.

The main positives I had with the movie were a truly great soundtrack by Hans Zimmer and spectacular visuals, the two things DC movies usually get better than Marvel. The performances of Pedro Pascal as Max Lord and Kristen Wiig as Barbara Minerva were also quite convincing. Sadly, this is where the positives end.

Wiig as Dr. Barbara Miverva

Pascal as the over-the-top Max Lord

I think the main problem this movie had was a very abstract theme/message, which lead to a boring and slow start and a very strange ending. Had it been handled in a different way, I think the movie would have resulted in a much more enjoyable experience.

Other than that, Gadot’s performance as Diana wasn’t as convincing as it’d been in the last movie, which was somewhat surprising as she felt very much like Wonder Woman in said movie.

Overall, I wouldn’t recommend watching the movie, though, from what I’ve seen, it has received a ton of positive reviews, so take mine with a grain of salt.

Now I’d like to talk specifics, so the next part will contain spoilers.

As I said before, the main issue I had with the movie was the whole “truth” theme surrounding Diana and the Amazons. It caused the beginning to be very slow and add very little. In my opinion, you could cut the whole young Diana moment and start with her saving the girl at the mall, which not only is a more interesting scene, but works well to describe who she is as a person. And the end could have been her convincing Maxwell to do the right thing for his son without the whole “truth is the only thing that matters” speech, I mean, she is Wonder Woman, believing in people is kind of her thing.

Upon giving it some thought, I have no problems with the story revolving around desires and having Barbara contrast Diana, as well as forcing her to move on from Trevor, though having him in the movie wasn’t the most original choice.

Finally, I also have some nitpicks, which I could see people dismissing but kind of bothered me at one point or another:

- Diana stealing a jet (which is multi-million dollar property) from the Smithsonian. Not only is this illegal and contrary to what she stands for, but she used her i.d. to get into the hangar.

- The golden Amazon armor was used once for spectacle value and didn’t really add anything to the movie, thus feeling like a tool to sell more toys.

- Diana learning to fly kind of renders the invisible jet useless, which sucks as it’s a very cool concept that’s unique to the character (unlike flying).

- The final battle between Cheetah and Diana was hard to follow (they both had similarly-colored clothing/fur) as well as lacking any progression (it was just two people punching each other).

- The Christmas scene at the end reminded me too much of a Christmas commercial, like those you see at the cinema before the movie starts. It could have been cut and have the Diana flying scene instead.
